What Our Patients Are Saying

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program designed to make dental care more affordable for Canadians who don’t have private insurance. Its goal is to improve oral health across the country by helping eligible individuals and families access essential dental services, such as exams, cleanings, fillings, and more, all without financial stress.

CDCP Eligibility: Do You Qualify for Government Dental Coverage?

  • You qualify for the CDCP if:
  • You’re a Canadian resident.
  • You’ve filed your tax return for the previous year.
  • You have no private dental insurance.
  • Your household income is below $90,000 a year.

The amount of coverage you receive depends on your income level. Those earning less than $70,000 can receive full coverage, while those earning between $70,000 and $90,000 may get partial coverage.

Phased Application Schedule: When Can You Apply?

  • Seniors (65+): Applications opened December 2023. No age subgroups; all eligible seniors can apply now.
Holders of a Disability Tax Credit Certificate: Applications have been open since June 27, 2024, for adults with a valid certificate.
  • Children Under 18: Applications have been open since June 27, 2024; parents apply on behalf.

Remaining Eligible Canadian Residents: Applications have been open since May 2025 for ages 18-64 without dental insurance, and income under $90,000.

What Dental Services Are Covered By the CDCP?

CDCP covers a wide range of dental services that are essential for your dental health, including:

  • Preventive services, such as teeth cleanings, sealants, and fluoride treatments.
  • Diagnostic services (exams and x-rays).
  • Restorative services, like fillings and cavity treatments.
  • Endodontic services (root canals).
  • Prosthodontic services, like partial and complete dentures.
  • Periodontal services, including deep scaling and treating abscesses.
  • Oral surgery services, such as tooth extractions.
  • Orthodontic services (only those that are medically necessary).

How are Co-payments Calculated Based on Income?

The CDCP is designed to reduce or remove the financial barriers to receiving essential dental care. However, depending on your household income, you may still have to pay part of the cost for certain services, known as a co-payment.

  • Under $70,000: Full coverage (100%).
  • Between $70,000 and $79,999: Partial coverage (60%), and you’ll pay the remaining 40%.
  • Between $80,000 and $89,999: Partial coverage (40%), and you’ll pay 60%.

Everything about Preauthorization

Some dental procedures under the CDCP need preauthorization before they can be done. This means your dentist must first submit a treatment plan to Sun Life, the plan administrator, for approval. Preauthorization ensures that the proposed service is covered under your plan and helps you understand how much will be paid by CDCP and what, if any, portion you’ll need to cover.

Typically, complex or high-cost procedures require preauthorization, such as crowns, dentures, bridges, and certain oral surgeries. Routine services like exams, cleanings, and fillings usually do not need prior approval.

At Lisgar Park Dental, we handle the preauthorization process of CDCP in Liberty Village for our patients. Our team will submit the required documents and keep you informed every step of the way, ensuring your treatment starts smoothly and without unexpected costs.

CDCP vs. Private & Other Government Insurance

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) works alongside, but not in place of, other dental coverage options. Many patients wonder how it interacts with private or provincial plans. Here’s what you need to know.

Can the CDCP Replace My Workplace or Private Dental Benefits?

No, the CDCP cannot replace your existing private or workplace dental insurance. If you already have private coverage, even if it’s through your employer or a family member, you’re not eligible to enroll in the CDCP. The plan is designed specifically for Canadians without private dental insurance.
However, if you lose private dental insurance, you may become eligible for CDCP in the next benefit year (July–June) after renewing your application, with eligibility confirmed via self-attested or verified insurance status and tax-filed income.

How Does the CDCP Work with Provincial/Territorial Dental Programs?

If you already receive coverage through a provincial or territorial dental program, you can still apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan. In this case, CDCP acts as a secondary payer, meaning it helps cover costs not fully paid by your provincial or territorial plan.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About the Canadian Dental Care Plan

Will my dental care be completely free under the CDCP?

It depends on your household income. If your income is under $70,000, your eligible dental services are fully covered with no out-of-pocket costs. If your income is between $70,000 and $90,000, you may need to pay a co-payment for some services.

To use your CDCP benefits, you need to visit a participating dentist. If your regular dentist isn’t enrolled, you can either ask them to join the program or choose a nearby participating clinic, such as Lisgar Park Dental in Liberty Village.

No, the CDCP generally directly pays participating dentists for eligible services. Paying upfront and seeking reimbursement is not standard, so it’s best to schedule your treatment at a clinic that accepts the plan.

Coverage is annual, based on the benefit year. You don’t need to reapply within the same year, but you must reconfirm your eligibility each year through renewal to continue receiving benefits. Your household income and insurance status are reviewed to ensure you still qualify.
